E=MC2 Why Equations are Relative[ly] Important for Scoring High on the MCAT

E=MC2 Why Equations are Relative[ly] Important for Scoring High on the MCAT MCAT Medical School Admissions The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems section of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) is conceptually one of the most difficult sections of the exam. With 59 questions in a 95-minute span, it integrates and tests dense subjects such as biochemistry, biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. This section not only requires a conceptual understanding of these topics, but also tests the student’s ability to interpret, analyze, and calculate the answer to complex problems. Because of this, it is vital that students know many equations cold prior to entering the test. Here we will provide you with recommendations for creating equation sheets and methods for memorizing them. To best equip yourself for test day, it is essential that you have a reliable list of equations. Many students choose to compile their own during the content review portion of their study schedule. Because the section is highly integrated, this allows students to organize the equations in a way that makes the most sense to them and allows them to group and memorize these equations. If you are looking for a starting point for an equation sheet, Free MCAT Prep and Gold Standard have many of the necessary equations listed. Keep in mind that some students will need more equations explicitly written down so make sure to compare these lists to your primary content review resource so that you are not missing any equations you may personally need to commit to memory. Now that you have started compiling your equation list, your next step is to begin memorizing. This is a daunting task for most students, and I can tell you that mass memorization of equations will follow you in medical school when you take courses like pharmacokinetics. Because of this, it is extremely helpful to equip yourself with methods for memorizing large lists and blocks of information such as this. While there are many memorization tools for this, we will focus on two methods for memorizing equations: chunking and relationships. Chunking is arguably the most common method for memorizing these equations. The key is to smart with small chunks of information and then build on your knowledge. Begin by memorizing, for example, the equations for kinematics in physics. Get a blank sheet of paper out and write ‘kinematics’ at the top and number the page with the number of equations you are required to know for kinematics. Then set a timer for 30 seconds to a minute and write as many of the equations as you can. When the timer runs out, pull out your formula sheet and write down the formulas you forgot or wrote incorrectly in red on your practice sheet. Repeat this process until you can write your kinematics formulas without any corrections. And as you learn each section of formulas, you begin testing sections together in the same practice until eventually you are reproducing your entire formula sheet from memory. A couple of quick tips on reproducing the entire formula sheet: it helps to have the categories memo rized in order and the number of required formulas that correspond to these categories. Often students create their own mnemonic to help with this or develop a method of reciting the categories and numbers to themselves. This process can be done in a week or two weeks but is best done over the entire course of your test preparation if you have time. Focusing on relationships between equations can also greatly improve your conceptual understanding of the relationships between physics, chemistry, organic chemistry and biochemistry. This is what defines the high scorers on this section of the MCAT. Rather than just ‘plugging and chugging’, this requires you to understand the units and relationships between the variables in the equations and how you can utilize multiple equations to get to your desired result. This becomes especially important in the electrical section of physics where there are many shared variables between equations and you can often manipulate multiple equations to produce other equations you have memorized. As you memorize equations, try to focus on what happens, for example, to acceleration if you increase mass. If the force is constant, we know that the acceleration must decrease linearly if we increase mass (F=ma). While this seems simple, it becomes more complex in later sections of physics and chemistry . Finally, understanding how to manipulate units to get desired units is extremely helpful in deriving forgotten equations with even just a conceptual understanding of this section. With these methods, this should help you overcome the daunting task of memorizing pages of equations! The time and effort you put toward studying these equations will result in confidence on test day and hopefully produce great increases in your score. Best of luck! Mental Health Transformation Blog Getting Started

Mental Health Transformation Blog Getting Started pexels.com However, I’ve done quite a bit of research on different classes, and quickly realized that there isn’t enough time in the day to add something like this to my schedule. Then, I came across YogaGlo Online, which offers classes online for individuals that aren’t near the California location of the studio. The biggest perk is that the online option makes it easier than ever to get fit without having to leave the house. Another perk is for those that are beginning yoga and uncomfortable with going to a studio to learn, as there’s now an option to participate without an audience until you’re more comfortable with your skills. That’s probably the aspect that I’m the most excited about, as I truly have no flexibility and no idea what I’m doing. The program offers teachers that work specifically with beginner-level classes, more intensive classes, travel classes, etc. So really, there’s a class for everyone. The other draw to this yoga site is that there are meditation classes offered as well, combining the physical fitness with the mental fitness into one, all-inclusive workout. This has been missing from my life up until this point, so I’m very much excited to get started on both aspects at the same time. Of course, the program doesn’t come without costs, as it’s going to run $15 a week, but considering the cost of a single class in an actual studio, I think that this is a bargain. Plus, I feel there are more choices to be made individually and that I’m not necessarily working around someone else’s schedule, but choosing options that make the most sense for me. Especially for college students, this is a very important aspect of the program. While many campus recreation centers do offer yoga and meditation classes, they are typically scheduled and in-person, which may be preferred to some, but certainly not to me. Plus, the amount of sheer stress placed on college students makes meditation all the more valuable, so it’s certainly something to consider. There are other online programs (and a few Youtube channels) specifically dedicated to yoga and meditation and offered for free, which fits in literally everyone’s budget. So the options are out there, you just have to do a little digging for them. Anyway, this new mental health initiative is something that I’m excited to begin, and I’m hoping that it’ll translate over into my physical health as well. The goal is to add yoga and meditation to a part of my daily routine, which will prevent me, at least for 120 minutes, from sitting on the couch and watching Netflix. I’m also hoping that it’ll entice me to try to eat healthier foods, adding more vegetables and fruits to my diet and removing the unwanted sugars completely. Either way, this is a healthy step in the right direction, so it’s something that I plan to dedicate myself to. So my healthy routine is going to begin on May 29, and I encourage everyone to join me on this journey. All you have to do is sign up for YogaGlo (which offers a 15-day free trial, just in case you aren’t sure the program is for you) and I’ll keep you posted as I begin my daily mental health routine! Join the classes that sound best for you and let me know your thoughts! College students across the country should value their mental health, and this is a great way to do so with minimal cost and time commitments!

6 Delicious Dishes to Try in Italy

6 Delicious Dishes to Try in Italy Image via: www.pixabay.com Creamy Gnocchi If you’re a fan of Olive Garden’s chicken and gnocchi soup (if you have not tried it, you are definitely missing out on something magical), trying creamy gnocchi on its own will be a beautiful experience for you. Gnocchi is a thick and heavy potato dumpling, and it is incredibly delicious! Gnocchi is usually served with a creamy, thick sauce that is similar to Alfredo sauce. It is also available with a delicious amount of parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. Creamy gnocchi is a perfect appetizer or side dish to a fantastic meal. However, in Italy, it tends to be a pretty expensive dish despite it being such a small meal. Image via: Wikimedia Commons Prosciutto Are you a bacon fan? If so, prosciutto just might be your cup of tea. Prosciutto is a dry-cured ham that is normally cut into very thin slices and served raw. In Italian, it is called prosciutto cudo. It is a household name all over the Italian countryside, especially in the kitchens of Italy. It is an absolute must-eat food in Italy. It is typically eaten as an appetizer for almost any meal. There are a number of things that you can try with prosciutto, like serving it with gnocchi, topping a pizza with it, or wrapping it around mozzarella. Such a creative and tasty food cannot be missed when you are in Italy! Image via: Wikipedia Carbonara You might have tried carbonara back home, but in Italy, it is an entirely different story. The delicious Italian dish is typically made with spaghetti pasta, but depending on the restaurant you go to, it might be served with linguine, bucatini, rigatoni, and fettucini. The dish is made with eggs, cheese, bacon, and black pepper. If you are a pasta lover, which I’m sure you are, carbonara is a must-eat while you are in Italy! Image via: Wikimedia Commons Gelato If you are an ice cream lover like I am, gelato will put you on a fast course to the heavens of sugary treats. This delicious Italian wonder is made with a milk base, cream, and sugar just like ice cream! It can also be flavored with fruits, nuts, and other toppings. While there are probably many ice cream parlors or frozen yogurt joints that serve gelato near you, nothing will compare to gelato in its country of origin. So what are you waiting for? Grab a spoon and get some! Image via: www.pixabay.com Tiramisu Speaking of dessert, have you ever tried tiramisu? You have probably heard the name in that awesome Macklemore song, but once you try it, you will definitely find your jam. It is an absolute classic dessert in Italy with many moderations. Tiramisu is a coffee-flavored custard dessert, made of miniature bananas (otherwise known as ladyfingers) that are coated in coffee, and coated in whipped eggs, sugar, and mascarpone cheese, right before being flavored with chocolate. Cater to your inner sweet tooth and try one of the most famous Italian desserts. Image via: www.pixabay.com Margherita Pizza Well, we all knew this was coming. What is a trip to Italy without eating a plate of delicious pizza? Margherita pizza is a far step beyond your typical doorstep delivery service. This pizza, which originated in Naples, has a variety of forms: large, crispy, small, doughy anything you want! It is basically your freshly made personal pizza that you can modify into the dish of your dreams. Margherita pizza is similar to your typical pizza, topped with tomato sauce and cheese, but its flatbread and toppings make it something a little more magical. Step outside your culinary comfort zone and try it!

The Many Risks Of Using Splenda

The Many Risks Of Using Splenda Photo Via: https://i.ytimg.com Nowadays, it seems as if most foods are bad for you, but what if the health implications don’t just lead to weight gain? What if some of these health concerns lead to more serious illnesses such as, I don’t know, cancer? Well, a recent study shows that that’s exactly what the problem with Splenda, the artificial sweetener, is. While those that use the sweetener are doing so as a healthier alternative to sugar, a recent study shows that this is not actually the case. While it may save a few calories now, it could potentially cause major issues down the road. A new study, recently published in the “International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health,” condemned the previously “safe” sweetener in stating that the potential dangers to a person’s health are too great, formally recommending that everyone avoid the sweetener. How did the study result in this startling outcome? The study followed lab mice that were fed sucralose (present in Splenda) on a daily basis throughout their lives. These mice later developed leukemia and other blood cancers. So for those that use Splenda on a daily basis in their coffee, tea or other drinks and foods, this is an alarming issue. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a group that assesses the safety of food additives, formally recommended consumers stop the use of Splenda, a huge change from their previous position that the additive was “safe.” Of course, there are quite a few factors working against this new study as well. For one thing, the lab behind the study has been criticized in the past, making their studies questionable. However, senior scientist at the CSPI, Lisa Lefferts, says, “for most food additives, the safety studies are conducted by the manufacturers who have financial incentives,” something that makes this study much more reliable as the lab reportedly received funding with no “special interests” in mind. Another issue with the study lies in the amount of sucralose the average consumer consumes. The doses of sucralose given to the mice in the study would be the equivalent of a person drinking a minimum of 10 cans of diet pop per day. Of course, that’s very unrealistic, but when you think about the other foods and drinks you use Splenda in, it adds up quickly, making this a cause for concern. Plus, according to Lefferts, “Even if you consume less, that doesn’t mean there’s no problem. When something causes cancer at high doses, it generally causes cancer at lower doses, the risk is just smaller.” So basically, just because you aren’t drinking 10 cans of pop a day doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t at risk to develop cancerous cells. While it may be difficult to take one, mouse-tested study seriously, it’s also important to know there is an abundance of research out there prompting consumers to avoid sucralose. For one thing, the sweeteners have been linked to weight gain rather than loss, defeating the purpose of using it, and it has also even been linked to blood sugar and insulin level problems, causing spikes and dips in these levels that actually lead to food cravings later on, which in turn, prevents consumers from losing weight. So while it’s very easy to discount one study and continue use of the sweetener, more and more evidence against sucralose is making the potential health problems much more difficult to ignore. The CSPI firmly believes that consumers need to stay away from sucralose, and they’re more than likely correct in their assessment. But before you go back to regular sugar, look into safer, healthier alternatives to both Splenda and sugar. Stevia extracts and other, inventive ways to sweeten drinks and foods are always researchable nowadays, making staying healthy and avoiding a cancerous future a much easier task. The bottom line: avoid Splenda. Your life might depend on it.
